Use of new characters and old characters
JapanKnowledge has an identification system of the old kanji and kanji variants. Therefore, you will be able to search by the old kanji or new kanji. The standard of the identification of the new and old kanji is based on the "Joyo-kanji jitaihyo" (guide to kanji characters and their readings, announced officially by the Japanese Ministry of Education) and "Jinmei-kanji jitaihyo" (list of kanji that can legally be used in registered personal names in Japan).
▲For example, if you search for "Ryoma Sakamoto," depending on the editing policies of each dictionaries (ex. approval of new kanji), the searched name will appear as "坂本竜馬"(new kanji) or "坂本龍馬"(old kanji).
About Machine Dependent Characters
Using machine dependent characters or extended kanjis, may cause garbled characters, and troubles in searching. Please do not use machine dependent characters and extended kanjis.
Permanent Link
A permanent link is a URL which remains unchanged for every page, and allows to save for example a page in which you have searched a word and filtered the content, or share a content (entry). If you and another person are both members of JapanKnowledge, you will be able to share the URL of search results by e-mail or text files. The permanent link is also useful to bookmark pages.
