This is the immortal Unabridged Dictionary of Buddhist Terms, compiled over more than 50 years by the late Dr. Hajime Nakamura, a world authority on Indian thought and Buddhist Studies. This JK digitized edition contains all 53,000 common noun Buddhist terms found in the complete four volumes of the dictionary.
As well as proper nouns, this four-volume dictionary of Buddhist studies contains far more common noun entries and sources than any other dictionary published in Japan or overseas. Great care has also been taken to explain terms in plain and easily understood language.
Drawing terms from a wide range of sources, the important feature of this dictionary is that these sources are clearly stated. While, naturally, selecting terms from the important Buddhist literature of India, China, and Japan, among others, terms are also selected from works other than classical Buddhist texts, such as classical Japanese literature, with which Japanese people are deeply familiar. Important terms are described using a multi-faceted approach, which gives abundant examples in each entry content to aid reader comprehension.
As the dictionary also indicates many of the original terms in Pali, Sanskrit, Tibetan, and other languages, it is also useful as a reference for those languages.
The JapanKnowledge edition also includes a Table of Abbreviated Sources which can be viewed at anytime in the “Materials” column on the right-hand side of the main screen.
