a) | Headwords are given in the form nearest to the actual pronunciation. |
b) | Inflecting words may not be given in the sentence-final form (shūshikei), but rather in other forms that are used more frequently. The inflecting suffix marker “•” is omitted. |
c) | Among dialectal terms sharing a common origin and similar form, those which are easier to comprehend by grouping them together are collected into a single entry with the principal form as the headword, with the other dialectal terms of similar forms placed in double angled parentheses 《 》, as shown in the example below: |
うざねはく 【方言】 《うざねをはく》 …… 《おざねはく》 …… 《うじゃねはく》 …… 《うざにはく》 …… 《うんざにはく》 …… 《うさねこく》 |
|
d) | The section on historical kana orthography is omitted. |
e) | Some of the kanji shown in the Kanji Orthography Section are rendered on the basis of meaning only. |
f) | In the Parts of Speech Section, verbs, adjectives, verbal adjectives, and particles are respectively identified as 〔動〕〔形〕〔形動〕 and 〔助〕, without specifying the type and pattern of their inflections. |
Descriptions in the Dialectal Terms Section are broken down into the following sub-sections, and are given in order of presentation: definitions, usage examples, area names, and source numbers.
a) | The policy of giving a succinct definition of a dialectal term is followed. When, for example, a dialectal term has a corresponding general term that can convey the same sense, the general term is given in lieu of its definition. But for some dialectal terms, descriptions provided in dialectal collections may also be retained. |
b) | When a dialectal term shares a common meaning with a general entry item, a reference is made to the definition of the general item instead of defining the dialectal term. When, however, the general term has multiple meanings, the appropriate definition is repeated for the dialectal term. |
c) | Description of dialectal names of plants and animals is limited to giving their standard or common names. Easily misunderstood items are identified as 動物 (dōbutsu; animals), 鳥 (tori;birds), 魚(sakana; fish), 貝(kai; shellfish), 植物(shokubutsu; plants), etc. as necessary. |
a) | Area names are taken from the source in which the item was recorded, and thus do not necessarily correspond with current administrative divisions. |
b) | When multiple localities are given in one definition, they are generally listed in north-to-south order. |
a) | All of the dialect collections serving as sources for entry items are numbered, and these numbers are given following the area name. |
b) | Each source is identified by a series of 3-digit numbers with or without a symbol †: |

Source numbers and the titles of sources are provided in the Hōgen Shiryō oyobi Hōgen Shutten-bangō Ichiran (「方言資料および方言出典番号一覧」; List of Materials on Dialects and Dialect Source Numbers)presented in the Appendix. |
