The process of putting the Dictionary on-line has given rise to phenomena such as the following:

• JIS-code Characters
  

  In order to attain optimal search results, JIS-code characters have been adopted whenever possible. Consequently, some of the characters in the on-line edition take forms that are different from those in the print edition.

• Displays in Windows Vista
  

  Windows Vista utilizes Japanese fonts that are in accord with JIS2004, the most up-to-date JIS code, with the result that in Windows Vista some kanji are displayed and printed in forms different from those of previous versions of Windows up to Windows XP. • Historical kana orthography
  

  Historical kana forms cannot be used when searching headwords. To perform search in historical kana, use Advanced Search and specify the scope to Historical Kana Orthography.
